Reporting French commands: demander de and dire de in conversation

Relay instructions with demander à quelqu’un de and dire de. Practise a short dialogue, reflexive commands, negatives and four transformation questions.

In short

Report an instruction with demander à quelqu’un de or dire à quelqu’un de + infinitive: elle nous a demandé de venir. For a negative instruction, put ne pas before the infinitive: elle nous a dit de ne pas partir.

Nora a demandé à Julien d’attendre.Julien
Nora lui a demandé d’attendre. The person represented by lui
Nora nous a demandé d’attendre. The speaker and the group represented by nous

The giver of the instruction is the subject of demander or dire. The recipient is the person expected to perform the infinitive. Before a vowel, de becomes d’: d’attendre, d’être. This infinitive pattern works after a present reporting verb too: elle nous dit de venir.

Nora has briefed Inès and Julien

You are Julien. Inès repeats Nora’s exact words; your lines turn them into reports. Both of you received each instruction. Switch on practice mode and say your report before revealing it. Nora’s moi becomes elle when Julien talks about her.

Your lines are hidden in practice mode. Say them aloud, then reveal to compare.
