Verb drill

French reported speech: a drill after dit que and explique que

Practise reporting French statements with a present reporting verb. Keep past, present and future meanings while adjusting subjects and possessives.

In short

After a present reporting verb such as dit or explique, keep the statement’s tense: « J’ai fini. » → Elle dit qu’elle a fini. Add que or qu’, then make the subjects and possessives match the people involved.

Study first: four times, one reporting frame

Another person reports Léa’s words immediately
Léa saysThe reportTime being described
Je travaille.Léa dit qu’elle travaille.Now or regularly
J’ai terminé.Léa dit qu’elle a terminé.A completed earlier action
Je travaillais le soir.Léa explique qu’elle travaillait le soir.An earlier habit
Je reviendrai.Léa annonce qu’elle reviendra.A later action

The reporting verb tells you when the message is being passed on. The verb after que tells you when its action happens. In elle explique qu’elle travaillait le soir, the explanation is happening now; the evening work belongs to an earlier period.

Sami dit : « Je suis disponible. » → Sami dit qu’il est disponible.

Sami says, “I’m available.” → Sami says that he is available.

Je suis becomes il est: keep the present tense, but conjugate for the new subject.

Keep the tense; complete the report

In every row, someone else reports the named speaker’s words straight away. Complete only the gap. Keep the original tense, and use the subject already printed in the report.
