| Subject | Future | Conditional |
|---|---|---|
| je | -ai | -ais |
| tu | -as | -ais |
| il / elle / on | -a | -ait |
| nous | -ons | -ions |
| vous | -ez | -iez |
| ils / elles | -ont | -aient |
How do you tell the future from the conditional in writing?
- Nous vous répondrez lundi.Nous vous répondrons lundi.
Nous is doing the replying. Vous is the recipient, so the future ending is -ons.
- Si elle avait le temps, elle viendra.Si elle avait le temps, elle viendrait.
The imagined condition si elle avait le temps takes a conditional result here: viendrait.
The exercise gives you the intended tense in each cue. Replace the form in brackets; keep the rest of the sentence. Watch three different contrasts: -ai/-ais, -ons/-ions and -ont/-aient. A nearby object pronoun can distract you from the subject.

- Si nous étions libres, nous avec vous. [viendrons] (conditionnel : hypothèse)
- Elle vous aider demain. [pourras] (futur : elle)
- Vous préciser votre idée ? [pourrez] (conditionnel : demande maintenant)
- Ils leur stage vendredi. [finirons] (futur : ils)
- Avec plus de temps, elles leur projet. [développeront] (conditionnel : hypothèse)
- Si tu acceptes, je disponible lundi. [serais] (futur : résultat)
- Je me demande si elle demain. [viendrait] (futur : question sur demain)
Which tense goes after si in French?
In a condition, compare si tu acceptes with si tu acceptais. The first can lead to a future result; the second can lead to a conditional result. In je me demande si, si means “whether” and introduces an indirect question. A future form fits a question about tomorrow.
