In short

Write down who you are speaking to and what you want to achieve. Prepare a main point, a reason and a concrete detail, then add a question for your listener. Rehearse from keywords so you can adapt your reply.

Start with a task you can act on

Votre amie cherche quelque chose à regarder ce soir. Recommandez-lui un film ou une série. Expliquez votre choix et répondez à ses questions.

Your friend is looking for something to watch this evening. Recommend a film or series. Explain your choice and answer her questions.

How do you prepare for a French speaking task?

Je te recommande cette série parce qu’elle est drôle et que les dialogues sont faciles à suivre. Les épisodes durent trente minutes. On pourrait regarder le premier ce soir. Tu as combien de temps ?

I recommend this series because it is funny and the dialogue is easy to follow. The episodes last thirty minutes. We could watch the first one this evening. How much time do you have?

The recommendation comes first. The reason explains the choice, and the episode length gives your friend something practical to consider. Say the message once from the five notes in the table. Then cover the model and use your own phrasing for the same points.

A reply changes the plan
  1. Friend

J’ai seulement vingt minutes avant de partir.

I only have twenty minutes before I leave.

  2. You

Alors, gardons la série pour demain. On peut regarder une courte vidéo ce soir.

Then let’s save the series for tomorrow. We can watch a short video this evening.

  3. Friend

Bonne idée. Sur quel sujet ?

    Good idea. On what topic?

  4. You

Sur la cuisine, si ça te plaît.

    About cooking, if you like.

Keep a repair phrase beside your notes: Je vais reformuler means “I’ll rephrase”. For an unclear question, try Vous pouvez préciser votre question ? Listen to the reply, choose the relevant note and continue. After the rehearsal, ask your partner to tell you the main message they understood.

Question 1No account needed
Your listener has twenty minutes; the episode lasts thirty. What should your next reply do?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Offer a shorter option or another time.. The new time constraint changes which recommendation will work.

Question 2No account needed
Which notes help you tell a past experience?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

When → plan → event → reaction. A past account needs a sequence and a reaction to what happened.
