L’un l’autre in French: each other, with the right preposition

Follow two colleagues working together, then build l’un l’autre, l’une à l’autre and les unes avec les autres from each verb’s normal construction.

In short

L’un l’autre means “each other” in a mutual action. Keep the verb’s preposition: se regarder l’un l’autre, se parler l’un à l’autre, se souvenir l’un de l’autre. For two women, use l’une; for feminine plural groups, use les unes.

How do you say “each other” in French?

Nora checks the argument; Lina checks the examples. Read the conversation, then hide Nora’s lines in practice mode and answer from the English cues. The expanded reciprocal expressions emphasise that the help, trust and feedback go both ways.

Your lines are hidden in practice mode. Say them aloud, then reveal to compare.
  1. Lina

Tu as le temps de relire mon introduction ?

    English

Do you have time to reread my introduction?

  2. Nora

Oui. Et tu peux vérifier mes exemples ?

Agree and ask Lina to check your examples.

    English

Yes. And can you check my examples?

  3. Lina

Bien sûr. Comme ça, nous nous aidons l’une l’autre.

    English

Of course. That way, we help each other.

  4. Nora

Exactement. Je vérifie ton raisonnement et tu vérifies le mien.

Explain the two directions of the help.

    English

Exactly. I check your reasoning and you check mine.

  5. Lina

Et si je trouve un passage peu clair ?

    English

And if I find an unclear passage?

  6. Nora

    Dis-le-moi. Nous pouvons nous faire confiance l’une à l’autre.

Ask her to tell you, and say you can trust each other.

    English

Tell me. We can trust each other.

  7. Lina

D’accord. Nous avons chacune notre rôle.

    English

All right. We each have our own role.

  8. Nora

Oui, et nous comptons l’une sur l’autre pour finir à temps.

Say you count on each other to finish on time.

    English

Yes, and we count on each other to finish on time.

  9. Lina

Pour la répétition, nous passons ensemble ?

    English

For the rehearsal, do we present together?

  10. Nora

Cette fois, nous passons l’une après l’autre : toi d’abord, puis moi.

Say you will go one after the other, Lina first.

    English

This time, we go one after the other: you first, then me.

The short ils se parlent already has a natural reciprocal reading. Add l’un à l’autre for emphasis or clarity. The extra words keep the normal construction of the verb. With compter sur, use l’une sur l’autre and keep comptent: this verb takes sur rather than a reflexive pronoun.
