What is the difference between tandis que and alors que?
LinaOne person’s preference
Focus: She likes working early.
Lina préfère travailler le matin.
Lina prefers working in the morning.
NoraThe other person’s preference
Focus: She likes working late.
Nora préfère travailler le soir.
Nora prefers working in the evening.
Lina préfère travailler le matin, tandis que Nora préfère le soir.
Lina prefers working in the morning, whereas Nora prefers the evening.
The sentence compares habits. Lina and Nora may work on different days. Here, tandis que sets their preferences side by side; it gives you no shared timetable. Alors que can make the same comparison.
Can tandis que mean “while”?
- Samir
Hier, pendant que je préparais mes arguments, que faisais-tu ?
Yesterday, while I was preparing my arguments, what were you doing?
- Lina
Je relisais mes notes tandis que Nora écrivait la conclusion.
I was rereading my notes while Nora was writing the conclusion.
- Samir
Vous avez travaillé jusqu’à quelle heure ?
Until what time did you work?
- Lina
Jusqu’à dix-neuf heures.
Until seven.
The conversation gives a shared period yesterday. The imparfait forms relisais and écrivait present actions in progress. Replacing tandis que with pendant que keeps the time reading clear.
Sometimes both meanings fit
Lina est déjà prête, alors que Nora cherche encore ses notes.
Lina is already ready, while Nora is still looking for her notes.
Déjà and encore highlight different levels of readiness at the same moment. You can read both overlap and contrast here. Context, rather than the connector alone, decides which relationship matters most.
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| A named subject | tandis que Nora écrit |
| Elision before a vowel | tandis qu’elle écrit |
| Indicative with être | alors qu’elle est prête |
Keep a subject and a conjugated verb after the connector. Compare alors qu’elle est prête with bien qu’elle soit prête: both can introduce a contrast, but bien que uses a different mood pattern.
