In short
Accepter is regular: j’accepte, nous acceptons, vous acceptez. Accept a thing directly: j’accepte l’invitation. Before an action verb, use de: j’accepte de venir. Before a vowel, de becomes d’: j’accepte d’aider. Completed forms use avoir: j’ai accepté.

Begin at A1 with the present and one everyday acceptance. The later tables are reference extensions for future course stages. The form j’accepte has an apostrophe because je loses its e before the vowel. The same applies to j’acceptais and j’accepterai.

A noun and an infinitive use different frames
| Pattern | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| Accepter + noun phrase | J’accepte cette proposition. | I accept this proposal. |
| Accepter de + infinitive | J’accepte de venir. | I agree to come. |
| Accepter d’ + vowel-initial infinitive | J’accepte d’aider Nora. | I agree to help Nora. |
L’invitation and cette proposition name things that can be accepted. Venir and aider name actions. The de belongs before the second verb, not before the direct noun object. Keep that contrast visible: accepter une invitation, accepter de venir. In the second pattern, the action stays in the infinitive.
The person accepting is the subject
Nous acceptons la proposition identifies us as the people accepting. J’ai accepté says that I made the acceptance. Je suis accepté has a different passive meaning, I am accepted, and does not replace the active completed-action pattern. For an A1 answer about your own decision, use j’accepte or j’ai accepté as required by the time.
Merci, j’accepte de participer.
Thank you, I agree to take part.
| Avoid | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Je accepte. | J’accepte. | Elide je before the vowel. |
| Nous acceptent. | Nous acceptons. | Use the nous ending -ons. |
| J’accepte à venir. | J’accepte de venir. | The action complement uses de. |
When accepting a real invitation, Merci, avec plaisir is also a useful conversational reply. The conjugation pattern helps when you need to name exactly what you accept or agree to do. Choose the noun or action first, then build the matching complement.
