Why does acheter take a grave accent?

In acheter, the e of -chet- sounds like "uh" when the ending is pronounced (nous achetons), but like "è" when the ending is silent (j'achète) or in the future (j'achèterai), so French writes the grave accent. The same pattern applies to lever, mener, peser, se promener: je me lève, je me promène.
