Why does nous mangeons keep its e?

Before a and o, a plain g would sound hard (like in gâteau). Adding e keeps the soft "j" sound: nous mangeons, je mangeais, en mangeant. Before i and e no extra e is needed: nous mangions, vous mangez. The same rule applies to nager, voyager, partager, changer, ranger: nous nageons, je voyageais.
