Use parler for speaking a language, talking to someone and talking about something. For a short chat, French often prefers discuter (on a discuté une heure), and for telling a story raconter. In the non-pronominal passé composé, use avoir: nous avons parlé. The reciprocal form se parler uses être: nous nous sommes parlé (we spoke to each other). Here parlé stays unchanged because people speak à someone; the pronoun is indirect.

Ils se parlent tous les jours au téléphone.

They talk to each other every day on the phone.

The pronominal se parler means "talk to each other".

Tu parles d'une surprise !

Talk about a surprise!

A spoken exclamation; the tone carries the meaning.

Four of the six present forms sound exactly the same: parle, parles, parle, parlent are all pronounced "parl". Only nous parlons and vous parlez sound different, so listen for the pronoun.
