Aider in seven tenses: help someone with aider à

Learn aider with seven tense tables and the pattern aider quelqu’un à faire quelque chose. Practise direct person objects, elision and aidons versus aidions.

In short

Aider takes the person directly: j’aide Nora. Add à + infinitive for the action: j’aide Nora à porter le sac. The regular present includes nous aidons and vous aidez. Completed forms use avoir: j’ai aidé. Do not put à before Nora in this pattern.

At A1, start with the present and the person you are helping. The later tables are reference extensions for future study. The vowel at the start of aide makes je shorten to j’. The same elision appears in j’aidais and j’aiderai, while the compound form begins j’ai aidé.

Nora is the direct object of aide. À porter names the action she is helped with. The à belongs before the infinitive, not before Nora. When the action is already understood, J’aide Nora is a complete simple statement. When the person is understood, Je peux aider can also work in context.

The course phrase vous aider keeps the same direct-object pattern

Je peux vous aider ?

Can I help you?

In vous aider, vous is the object pronoun for the person receiving help. The object pronoun comes directly before aider, with no à between them. Keep the beginner pattern in whole chunks: je vous aide, je peux vous aider. A longer sentence can add the action afterward, as in Je peux vous aider à trouver cette taille ?
