Start with the present if you are learning at A1. Use apporter with the object being brought to a place: a bag, a chair or a notebook. The seven tables also provide later reference forms. The subjunctive and conditional sections are extensions beyond the beginner present-tense goal.

Keep the stem apport-
For the present, remove -er from apporter and add -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent. The stem already ends in t, so nous apportons needs no spelling repair. J’apporte has an apostrophe because je loses its e before the vowel at the beginning of apporte. The same elision applies to j’apportais and j’apporterai.
| Avoid | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Je apporte un sac. | J’apporte un sac. | Elide je before the vowel. |
| Nous apportent les chaises. | Nous apportons les chaises. | Nous takes -ons, not the ils ending. |
| J’ai apporter les clés. | J’ai apporté les clés. | After ai, use the past participle. |
The extra form in the title: qu’il ait apporté
Ait apporté is not the present subjunctive apporte. It is the third-person singular past subjunctive: the present subjunctive of avoir, ait, followed by apporté. It presents the bringing as completed in a clause requiring the subjunctive. Learn it as an advanced reference form after you can use j’apporte and j’ai apporté.
Je suis contente qu’il ait apporté les clés.
I’m glad he brought the keys.
Il faut qu’il apporte les clés.
He needs to bring the keys.
The second example requests an action with the present subjunctive apporte. The first expresses a reaction to a completed action with ait apporté. The difference comes from the whole construction, including the auxiliary, rather than an accent added to apporte.
Apporter something; amener someone
For an ordinary invitation, J’apporte un gâteau says you are bringing a cake. J’amène ma sœur says you are bringing your sister along. This object/person contrast gives beginners a useful choice in these examples. Keep the object after apporter and add a destination when needed: J’apporte une chaise dans la cuisine.
