Hear the difference in a conversation

Avant de sortir
  1. Nora

    Tu es prête ?

    Are you ready?

  2. Inès

    Oui, mais j’ai une question.

Yes, but I have a question.

  3. Nora

    Tu as ton billet ?

    Have you got your ticket?

  4. Inès

Oui, il est dans mon sac.

    Yes, it’s in my bag.

In these avoir expressions, the word after the verb stays the same whoever speaks: Lina a froid, Paul a froid. An adjective after être can change: Lina est contente, Paul est content. That difference helps you build a whole sentence, rather than translate the English verb alone.

What should you check when you conjugate avoir?

  • Je ai un chat.J’ai un chat.

Before ai, the final vowel of je drops and an apostrophe joins the words.

  • Elle a vingt ans vieux.Elle a vingt ans.

Age uses a number followed by ans. Leave out an extra word for “old”.

  • Nous avont un chien.Nous avons un chien.

The nous form ends in -ons: nous avons.
