B1 French reading: why a commuter chose a slower route

Read a French commuter’s account with eight glosses and translation. Compare journey time, comfort and daily priorities in three reading questions.

In short

Clara accepts a longer journey because she values what happens during it and how she feels on arrival. Compare the two routes, then find the situation in which she still chooses speed.

Read it in English

For three years, I took the metro to the office. The journey lasted thirty minutes, with two changes. On paper, it was ideal. Yet I spent much of it standing, watching doors and signs. I often arrived tense before I had even opened my messages.

One morning, a service interruption forced me to take the bus. I walked ten minutes to the stop, then travelled thirty-five minutes without changing. The bus was slower, but I found a seat. I read a few pages and looked at the river. At the office, I noticed that I was less exhausted than usual.

I tried this alternative for two weeks. My pass covered both forms of transport, so the price did not change. On the other hand, I had to leave fifteen minutes earlier. I packed my bag in the evening to avoid rushing in the morning. This small effort seemed reasonable compared with the calm I gained.

Today, I generally take the bus. I know my neighbourhood’s streets better and walking is part of my routine. If I have a very early appointment, I take the metro again: I have not forgotten its advantage. I no longer try to save every minute. Instead, I choose how to begin my day. This change taught me to compare the length of a journey with its quality.
