Three complements, three uses
| Construction | French example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| conclure que + clause | Le rapport conclut que l’essai doit continuer. | State the conclusion as a complete proposition. |
| conclure à + noun | L’équipe conclut à la nécessité d’un nouvel essai. | Name the finding through a noun phrase. |
| conclure + agreement | Les partenaires concluent un accord. | Reach or finalise an agreement. |
Conclure à une erreur means to reach the finding that there is an error. Conclure un accord takes the agreement directly. Do not insert à merely because another use of the verb requires it. With conclure que, the clause’s mood depends on the intended construction and stance; the straightforward report example here uses the indicative.
- Je concluerai demain.Je conclurai demain.
The future stem is conclur-, without an added e.
- Elle a conclut un accord.Elle a conclu un accord.
Conclu is the participle; conclut is the present il/elle form.
- Il faut que vous concluez.Il faut que vous concluiez.
The present subjunctive vous form is concluiez.
Nous concluions and vous concluiez occur in both the imparfait and present subjunctive. The opening words distinguish a past account from a requirement. Preserve the i in both forms and use the surrounding sentence to identify the tense or mood.
