DELF A2 message task: apologise and say what you will do next

Practise a French apology after forgetting to return a borrowed tripod. Acknowledge the mistake, offer a feasible next step and confirm the agreed handover.

In short

Acknowledge the forgotten return and the next action: Désolé, j’ai oublié de te rapporter ton trépied hier. Je peux te l’apporter ce soir. Agree a time the other person can manage, then repeat the item, place and time in the final confirmation.

You borrowed Léo’s camera tripod, un trépied, and promised to return it yesterday. It is still at your home. Léo needs it tomorrow morning at 9 h, so you offer a return this evening. The conversation must end with an arrangement both people can actually attend.

  1. Salut, tu as encore mon trépied ? J’en ai besoin demain à 9 h. Tu devais me le rapporter hier.Hi, do you still have my tripod? I need it tomorrow at nine. You were supposed to bring it back yesterday.
  2. You forgot the promised return and still have the tripod. Acknowledge that accurately.

  4. Je ne suis pas disponible avant 19 h 30. Est-ce que tu pourrais venir à 20 h ?I’m not available before half past seven. Could you come at eight?
  5. You can come at 20 h. Accept the feasible alternative.

  6. Merci. Retrouvons-nous à 20 h devant la bibliothèque.Thank you. Let’s meet at eight outside the library.
  7. Confirm the agreed item, location and time.

I can bring it to you at seven this evening, if that suits you.

Oublier de names the missed action

Te identifies Léo as the recipient, and le replaces le trépied. J’ai oublié ton trépied could describe forgetting the object somewhere; the fuller phrase specifies that the forgotten action was returning it yesterday.

I forgot to bring your tripod back. I can bring it to you this evening.

A feasible offer responds to the actual need

Léo needs the equipment tomorrow at 9 h. A return at noon tomorrow would not meet that stated need. The initial 19 h offer also fails his availability. Accepting 20 h this evening solves both constraints in the practice exchange; it is then confirmed with the library location.

An apology is more useful when the next step is specific. Keep the acknowledgement short, offer a realistic return and repeat the final agreement after any change. Do not report the return as completed until the item has actually been handed over.
