In short
Separate the request’s content, its perceived effect and the speaker’s stated intention. “It seemed aggressive to me” does not establish “you intended aggression”. Ask both participants to confirm the relay before proposing a wording.
Yellow the idea to rememberBlue French to learn

Sam accepts the deadline but misses the contextual explanation. Léa says she meant to remind Sam of a deadline she believed they had already agreed. The mediator identifies that distinction and preserves the effect on Sam without treating Léa’s account as independently proven. No national rule is needed to explain these individuals’ exchange.

Votre message m’a paru agressif.

- Léa
Je voulais seulement rappeler l’échéance.
English
I only meant to remind you of the deadline.

C’est bien cela.

Il faut distinguer la date et l’effet de la formulation.
We should distinguish the date and the effect of the wording.

Oui, le même document et la même date.
English
Yes, the same document and date.
- Médiateur
Sam, ai-je bien restitué votre réserve sur la première formulation ?
Sam, have I faithfully relayed your reservation about the first wording?
English
Sam, have I faithfully relayed your reservation about the first wording?
- Sam
Oui, vous n’avez pas transformé mon ressenti en accusation d’intention.
English
Yes, you have not turned my response into an accusation of intent.
Agreement on content can coexist with a delivery concern
The same date and document remain after the reformulation. Sam’s concern is therefore not erased by the practical agreement. Conversely, Léa’s clarification does not automatically invalidate Sam’s reading of the original message. A faithful relay makes both positions intelligible and asks whether the proposed wording reflects them.
When translating the judgement, retain an attribution such as Sam a ressenti… and the relevant phrase. A polished register should not harden a reported feeling into a claim of deliberate hostility.
