Discuss a cultural work you did not enjoy in French

Discuss a French film you did not enjoy across four scenes: explain taste, support a criticism, respect a friend’s view and identify another audience.

In short

Say Le rythme m’a moins convenu, then name the feature behind your reaction. You can acknowledge a friend’s different experience with Je comprends ce qui t’a touché without adopting their opinion. A useful disagreement concerns the work and your expectations, rather than judging the person who liked it.

Two friends have different reactions to an slow-paced film. The scenes below move from a general response to a specific observation, then to audience fit. They do not require one person to persuade the other to change their taste.

1

State a difference in taste

Separate your response from a claim about every viewer.

Your friendTu as aimé le film que je t’ai conseillé ?Did you like the film I recommended?
YouPas autant que toi, je crois. Le rythme m’a moins convenu. Not as much as you, I think. The pacing suited me less.
Your friendMoi, j’ai justement aimé cette lenteur.I liked that slowness in particular.
YouJe comprends. I wanted a faster story that evening.
Your friendDonc ce n’est pas le sujet qui t’a gêné ?So the subject wasn’t what bothered you?
No, it was mainly the way the story moved forward.
2

Name one specific criticism

Give an observation rather than dismissing the whole work.

Your friendQu’est-ce qui t’a semblé trop long ?What felt too long to you?
The three port scenes repeat almost the same conversation.
Your friendElles montrent l’attente des personnages. They show the characters waiting.
Yes, I see the intention, but the repetition tired me.
Your friendTu aurais gardé une seule scène ?Would you have kept just one scene?
Perhaps two. I would have wanted the last to add something new.
3

Respect a friend’s preference

Do not turn disagreement into a judgement of the person.

Your friendC’est pourtant mon film préféré de l’année.It’s still my favourite film of the year.
Nos attentes étaient différentes.I’m not questioning your choice. Our expectations were different.
Your friendLes silences me rappellent des conversations de ma famille. The silences remind me of conversations in my family.
YouJe comprends mieux ce qui t’a touché.I understand better what moved you.
Your friendEt toi, y a-t-il quand même un moment que tu gardes ?And is there still a moment you will remember?
Yes, the scene where they look at the photographs without speaking.
4

Recommend to another audience

A work you disliked may fit a different preference.

Your friendTu le conseillerais à quelqu’un malgré tes réserves ?Would you recommend it to anyone despite your reservations?
Yes, to people who like observing details and silences.
Your friendEt pas à ceux qui cherchent du suspense ?And not to people looking for suspense?
YouJe préciserais qu’il n’y a pas beaucoup de rebondissements.I would specify that there aren’t many plot twists.
So you wouldn’t simply call it bad.
YouNon. No. I prefer to explain what didn’t suit me.

Give the disagreement an object

The criticism names three repeated conversations, so the friend can explain what those scenes did for them. “C’était nul” would make the reaction harder to discuss. You can recognise an intention while finding its effect unconvincing: Je vois l’intention, mais la répétition m’a lassé keeps those two judgements separate.

Acknowledge the personal connection

The friend relates the silences to family conversations. Touché agrees with a male friend as the preceding direct object t’; when addressing a woman, write touchée. The speaker still retains their different view of the pacing.

The examples use a male reviewer in gêné and lassé; adapt to gênée and lassée for a female reviewer. Clear agreement helps keep the speakers and the people affected distinct in these short exchanges.

A qualified recommendation can follow a negative experience. Name the audience likely to value the feature you did not enjoy, and disclose the limitation relevant to another audience. This produces more useful information than assuming your own reaction settles the work’s value for everyone.
