Explain a confounding variable in French with a concrete example

Practise a sixteen-line French explanation of a confounding variable using green space, income and a proposed follow-up, with clear causal limits.

In short

A facteur de confusion can distort the relationship being studied because it is connected with both the exposure being compared and the outcome, without being an intermediate effect of that exposure. In this hypothetical example, income may influence both access to a green neighbourhood and reported well-being. Tenir compte du revenu means considering that factor; it does not automatically remove every possible bias.

In this hypothetical teaching example, a resident has read that people near parks report higher well-being. The researcher explains why that association alone does not show that the park caused it. The discussion separates the observed relationship, a possible third factor and a proposed follow-up study.

  1. Habitante

    English

So parks necessarily make people happier?

  2. Chercheur

The example shows an association, not yet a cause.

    English

The example shows an association, not yet a cause.

  3. Habitante

Quelle autre explication faudrait-il examiner ?

    English

What other explanation should be examined?

  4. Chercheur

Le revenu pourrait jouer un rôle.

    Income could play a role.

    English

    Income could play a role.

  5. Habitante

Quel rapport avec les parcs ?

    English

What does that have to do with parks?

  6. Chercheur

People with more resources may also have easier access to some green neighbourhoods.

    English

People with more resources may also have easier access to some green neighbourhoods.

  7. Habitante

    English

And income can be linked to well-being?

  8. Chercheur

Oui, par plusieurs conditions de vie. Il faut donc examiner ce troisième facteur.

Yes, through several living conditions. So that third factor needs examining.

    English

Yes, through several living conditions. So that third factor needs examining.

  9. Habitante

    English

Is that what is called a confounding factor?

  10. Chercheur

That is the idea: it may contribute to the relationship we observe.

    English

That is the idea: it may contribute to the relationship we observe.

  11. Habitante

    English

If you take income into account, is everything resolved?

  12. Chercheur

Non.

No. It addresses one possible explanation, but other differences may remain.

    English

No. It addresses one possible explanation, but other differences may remain.

  13. Habitante

    Que proposeriez-vous ensuite ?

    English

    What would you propose next?

  14. Chercheur

Follow residents before and after a change, with a relevant comparison group.

    English

Follow residents before and after a change, with a relevant comparison group.

  15. Habitante

    English

Has that new study already been done here?

  16. Chercheur

No, it is a proposed next step, separate from the observed result.

    English

No, it is a proposed next step, separate from the observed result.

Observation, explanation and proposal

The observed association remains real within the supplied example. Introducing income does not prove that parks have no effect; it identifies a possible alternative influence. The proposed follow-up is also not a completed result. Keep pourrait, examiner and proposer where those words express the current evidence status.
