When does finir take -iss-?
The present plural gives you finiss- for the whole imparfait: je finissais, nous finissions. The present subjunctive also uses it: que je finisse, que nous finissions. The future and conditional return to the infinitive finir: je finirai, je finirais. The participle stays short: fini.
| Pattern | French example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| finir + nom | Je finis mon café. | I’m finishing my coffee. |
| finir de + infinitif | Je finis de lire le dossier. | I’m finishing reading the file. |
| finir par + infinitif | Elle finit par accepter. | She ends up accepting. |
To say you have finished doing something, keep de before the next infinitive: j’ai fini de travailler. Finir par gives the eventual result: j’ai fini par comprendre. The preposition changes the meaning even though the verb forms follow the same tables.
- Nous finons le travail.Nous finissons le travail.
Regular verbs like finir add -iss- in the present plural.
- J’ai finit mon exercice.J’ai fini mon exercice.
The past participle is fini. The form finit is present with il, elle or on.
- Elle a fini travailler.Elle a fini de travailler.
