« Parfait ! » dit-elle.

Read it in English

Lucie is starting a new job at home. She sets up her desk next to the window, because she likes the light.

She puts the computer on the desk and places the lamp to the left of the screen. The cable runs under the desk.

The chair is in front of the desk, of course. Behind the chair, there's a shelf with files.

The houseplant is between the shelf and the door. And opposite the desk, on the wall, Lucie hangs a photo of the sea. "Perfect!" she says.

When does de + le become du?

Prepositions that end in de (à côté de, en face de, à gauche de, près de, loin de) contract with le and les: à côté du lit, en face des fenêtres. With la and l', nothing changes: à côté de la porte, en face de l'école. Sur, sous, devant, derrière and entre do not require a linking de before the following noun: sur le bureau, entre le lit et la porte. A noun phrase can itself begin with de or des: sous de grands arbres. That is a different job for de.

The lamp is near the bed, far from the door.

The cat sleeps between the sofa and the wall.
