How do you read prices on a French menu?
| French | English |
|---|---|
| le plat du jour | dish of the day |
| la formule | set lunch deal |
| entrée + plat | starter + main |
| à la carte | ordered separately |
| le pourboire | tip |
| Ça fait combien ? | How much is it? |
Notice how prices are said: douze euros cinquante for €12.50, with no et and no centimes. In a café, Ça fait combien ? asks for the total, and the server may answer with just the numbers: quatorze, s'il vous plaît.
Lunch deals called formules are common: Formule midi : plat + café, 13 €. In French cafés, service is included in the price (service compris), so a tip is a small optional extra, often just rounding up.
