French climate debate: concede uncertainty without conceding inaction

Practise a French climate-policy discussion that concedes a measurement limit, answers an objection and defines a bounded next step without claiming certainty.

In short

Concede the precise limit, then explain what decision it supports. It does not itself settle whether a bounded, reversible trial is worthwhile. State the proposed safeguards and keep agreement on a protocol distinct from approval of an expansion.

Yellow the idea to rememberBlue French to learn

This hypothetical meeting concerns building-use measurements. The observed decrease is supplied as a local finding; its cause and annual persistence remain open. Nora answers those objections instead of repeating a slogan. Malik changes his position only as far as the revised proposal warrants.

Your lines are hidden in practice mode. Say them aloud, then reveal to compare.
  1. Nora

    English

The readings show a decrease in the two equipped buildings.

  2. Malik

Over the three observed weeks, yes. But we do not know what will happen in winter.

    English

Over the three observed weeks, yes. But we do not know what will happen in winter.

  3. Nora

    English

I agree with you about that limit: we do not yet have an annual assessment.

  4. Malik

In that case, why already consider a second phase?

    English

In that case, why already consider a second phase?

  5. Nora

    English

Because a limited phase can let us measure the effects under other conditions.

  6. Malik

Provided the local result is not presented as a general success.

    English

Provided the local result is not presented as a general success.

  7. Nora

    English

Absolutely. The finding concerns two buildings and three weeks, nothing more.

  8. Malik

And what if the decrease mainly came from lower attendance?

    English

And what if the decrease mainly came from lower attendance?

  9. Nora

    English

That is a possible explanation. We should also compare opening hours and occupancy.

  10. Malik

So you recognise that the effect of the system itself has not been established.

    English

So you recognise that the effect of the system itself has not been established.

  11. Nora

Oui.

    English

Yes. This uncertainty justifies better-designed monitoring; it does not prove that every trial would be useless.

  12. Malik

I can support a reversible trial, but not a commitment without a cost limit.

    English

I can support a reversible trial, but not a commitment without a cost limit.

  13. Nora

    English

Then let us set a maximum budget and a stopping point before any expansion.

  14. Malik

Avec quels critères déciderions-nous de poursuivre ?

Using what criteria would we decide to continue?

    English

Using what criteria would we decide to continue?

  15. Nora

    English

Comparable measurements, documented costs and an assessment of practical constraints. We still need to define the thresholds together.

  16. Malik

Agreed that we should prepare that protocol. That is not yet an agreement to expand.

    English

Agreed that we should prepare that protocol. That is not yet an agreement to expand.

Concede the claim actually challenged

You are right about the short observation period; it does not yet allow us to attribute the decrease to the system.

The concession covers duration and causal attribution. It does not silently accept an unrelated conclusion about every possible trial. Equally, refusing that conclusion does not prove the trial will work. The argument must identify what information a new phase could add and at what cost.

Give the opponent something concrete to assess

Budget maximal, point d’arrêt and mesures comparables turn a broad dispute into conditions that can be discussed. The dialogue leaves thresholds open because none have been supplied. Its last line records the narrow agreement actually reached, rather than announcing unanimous support for expansion.

Question 1No account needed
Which claim is accepted by both speakers?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

There is no annual assessment yet.. Both accept the observation-period limit.

Question 2No account needed
What does Nora propose in response to the occupancy objection?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Compare hours and occupancy.. She proposes relevant additional comparison rather than denying the possible confounder.

Question 3No account needed
What has Malik finally agreed to?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Preparing a bounded trial protocol.. The final line explicitly excludes agreement on expansion.

For speaking practice, take Malik’s role and add one answerable objection about the proposed protocol. Reply with a specific concession and a corresponding change in the proposal. Avoid turning uncertainty into either automatic permission or automatic prohibition.
