In short
A French date is le + number + month: le 14 juillet. Only the first is an ordinal: le premier mai. With the day of the week, drop le before the number: lundi 3 février. Years are said in full: deux mille vingt-cinq.

How do you write the date in French?
- No elision before onze: le onze novembre, not l'onze.
- In letters, write the date with the town: Lyon, le 4 mai 2025.
- Ask the date with On est le combien ? or Nous sommes le combien ? Answer On est le 4.
When you read a date aloud, the year follows the month: le 14 juillet 1789 is le quatorze juillet dix-sept cent quatre-vingt-neuf or mille sept cent quatre-vingt-neuf. For recent years, always deux mille: deux mille vingt-six. On forms, dates are written with slashes, day first: 14/07/2026.
