French exam prompt phrases: 24 cards for obligations and choices

Learn twenty-four French task-instruction chunks that distinguish required actions, optional choices and limits, with examples explaining what each asks you to do.

In short

Vous devez introduces an obligation; vous pouvez introduces a possibility. Au choix allows selection, while en tenant compte de names information you must consider. Read the whole instruction before deciding whether an example is optional or a requested part of the task.

A prompt may combine several kinds of instruction in one paragraph. Mark the required action, identify any choice and note the limit. A suggested example can help you develop a response, but it does not replace the task’s actual purpose. The cards below use original small examples to make those roles visible.

Permission and obligation can occur together

Vous devez expliquer votre choix. Vous pouvez l’illustrer par une expérience personnelle.

You must explain your choice. You may illustrate it with a personal experience.

The reasoned explanation is required; a personal experience is offered as one possible way to illustrate it. If the instruction instead says donnez un exemple personnel, that example is requested. The verb of the instruction changes its force even when the topic stays the same.

Minimum and maximum point in opposite directions

Au moins gives a lower boundary; au maximum gives an upper boundary. A particular preparation exercise can impose a maximum without making it a universal examination rule. Apply the limits actually stated in the task in front of you. Similarly, en tenant compte du budget means your proposal must engage with that budget, not merely repeat its number.
