A home description can move from a whole room to an object within it. Sorting the words first helps you choose a precise location phrase. The exercise separates rooms, movable furniture and building elements. Each example makes the intended meaning visible, especially for bureau, which can also mean an office in another context.

La lampe est dans la chambre, sur le bureau.
The lamp is in the bedroom, on the desk.
The sentence gives two compatible locations. Dans la chambre places the lamp inside the room. Sur le bureau places it on a particular surface within that room. Saying only dans la chambre would not tell a visitor whether it is on the desk, beside the bed or on a shelf.
| French | What the phrase locates |
|---|---|
| dans la chambre | Inside the bedroom |
| sur le bureau | On the desk surface |
| près de la fenêtre | Near the window |
| devant la porte | In front of the door |
For a short description, name the room first and add two objects: Dans la chambre, il y a un lit et un bureau. Then locate one smaller object with a second sentence. This creates a clear path from the space to its contents without confusing the room with the furniture inside it.
