French invitation text: you can come, but only for the first hour

Accept a French invitation for only its first hour. State arrival and departure times, check that a short visit works and confirm the host’s reply.

In short

Say Je peux venir de 18 h à 19 h, mais je dois partir à 19 h. Ça te va ?. You accept a specific part of the invitation and ask whether it suits the host. Naming both times is clearer than saying je viens un peu without a limit.

Nora invites you to a games evening from 18:00 to 21:00. You are free for its first hour only and need to leave at 19:00. Choose replies that accept that shorter visit, ask whether it works and confirm the agreed arrival time. A reply saying you are unavailable all evening would give different information.

  1. Salut ! On fait une soirée jeux samedi, de 18 h à 21 h, chez moi. Tu veux venir ?Hi! We’re having a games evening on Saturday, from 18:00 to 21:00, at my place. Do you want to come?
  2. Accept only the first hour and state when you must leave.

  3. Ask whether the short visit suits Nora.

  4. Oui, pas de problème ! Viens à 18 h. On commence par un petit jeu.Yes, no problem! Come at 18:00. We’ll begin with a short game.
  5. Confirm the accepted arrival and departure times.

A short visit can still be an acceptance

Je peux venir gives a positive answer. Mais je dois partir à 19 h adds the limit. Seulement une heure means only one hour. Keep those parts together so that Nora knows both your willingness to come and your availability. The host’s reply then establishes whether the arrangement works in this particular exchange.

Je peux rester jusqu’à dix-neuf heures.

I can stay until seven in the evening.

Jusqu’à gives the endpoint. De 18 h à 19 h gives both boundaries. If the starting time is not already agreed, use the full range rather than only the departure. The host may need the arrival detail to choose an activity or arrange the first round.

The model ends the visit at nineteen while the evening continues until twenty-one. Do not turn je dois partir into on doit finir: the first concerns your departure, and the second would concern everyone finishing. That small subject change would alter the plan you are proposing.
