French l pronunciation: lit, elle and ville

Make a clear French l at the start and end of words. Use lit, elle and ville, picture cards, a printable sound sheet and a quiz on l and ill spellings.

In short

For French /l/, touch the tip of your tongue near your upper teeth and let air pass along the sides. Keep that clear contact in lit [li], elle [ɛl] and ville [vil]. Finish elle on the consonant, with no extra vowel after it.

Le son /l/ · fiche

1 · Make front contact

Place the tongue tip near the ridge behind the upper teeth. Let the air escape at the sides; keep the movement light.

Le lit est près de la fenêtre. The bed is near the window.

2 · Keep final l clear

The /l/ of elle remains a consonant. If your English final l is strongly “dark”, try keeping the back of your tongue more relaxed.

Elle attend.She is waiting.

3 · Join a pronounced l to the next vowel

In elle arrive, /l/ is already present in elle. Carry it into the next syllable: [ɛ.la.ʁiv]. This is enchaînement.

Elle arrive à midi. She arrives at noon.

4 · Read ll as part of the word

Two letters can represent one /l/. Compare ville [vil] with fille [fij], which ends with the glide /j/.

la ville [vil]the town
la fille [fij]the girl / daughter

5 · Check final written l

Fil ends /l/; fusil ends on its vowel. Whole-word pronunciation is more useful than an “always pronounce final l” shortcut.

le fil [fil]thread
le fusil [fyzi]rifle

How do you pronounce the French l?

Elle. Elle arrive. Elle arrive à midi.

She. She arrives. She arrives at noon.

Say the sequence aloud. Keep the /l/ in each version and let the next vowel follow it smoothly.

Try lit, then le lit, then Le lit est près de la fenêtre. The first word gives you a simple tongue movement; the sentence puts it to work. With a partner, ask which word they understood and whether an extra vowel followed your final /l/. A useful response is specific: “I heard elle as two syllables” gives you one clear thing to try again.
