In short
Choose a light source, a material detail and a restrained action: une lueur, le bois ciré, effleurer la table. Concrete nouns locate the scene; collocations such as retenir son souffle show a character’s reaction without explaining every feeling.

A dim interior becomes readable through selected details rather than a list of vague adjectives. The cards separate light, surfaces and movement. Several words are abstract or describe an action; the picture set below focuses on objects and materials that can be shown directly.

Give the detail a narrative job
The lamp explains which part of the desk can be seen. The rug changes the sound of footsteps. A cold handle gives a tactile detail at the moment of entry. You can then switch from background to action: La lampe éclairait le bureau ; elle posa la tasse. The material details support the movement rather than interrupting it.
