B1 French story: who says je in an old family letter?

Read a French family story with a letter inside it. Track who says je, who lent the scarf and when the journey happened, with glosses and questions.

In short

When a story quotes a letter, je belongs to the person who wrote that letter. Here Héloïse tells the story, then reads her aunt’s words aloud. The quotation marks show where the voice changes.

Ton écharpe rouge me tient chaud : merci de me l’avoir prêtée !

Read it in English

Héloïse tells the story: My name is Héloïse. On Sunday, I was helping my father tidy his living room when we found a box of letters. He chose one with a blue envelope. “This one is from my sister Anne,” he told me. “She sent it before you were born.” I mainly knew my aunt’s short messages. I wanted to discover this long letter.

My father suggested I read it aloud. I carefully opened the sheet. At the top, Anne had written the name of a village near a lake. Here is the passage I read:

Anne writes to her brother: “I arrived this morning. The village is very quiet. From my room I can see the lake and the mountains. Your red scarf is keeping me warm: thank you for lending it to me! I’m going to stay here for a few days. I’ll give it back when I return. Meanwhile, I’m sending you this first letter. Anne.”

Héloïse resumes her story: After the reading, my father smiled. “I’d completely forgotten that scarf!” He explained that he had bought it while he was a student, then lent it to his sister for her trip. I was still looking at the blue envelope. My aunt’s voice suddenly seemed very close. I asked my father if we could phone her.
