B1 French reading: who wrote the note in the margin?

A pencilled suspicion sits beside a printed promise. Read a B1 French text and distinguish the author’s words from a previous reader’s note, with glosses and questions.

In short

A note dans la marge sits beside the main text. Check who wrote it and how strongly it speaks: Il ment peut-être records a suspicion. This reading follows Chloé as she separates a printed promise from a previous reader’s comment.

B1 · A promise and a pencilled comment

» a dit Nora.

Read it in English

Chloé was reading a novel she had bought from her friend Nora. In this second-hand copy, a pencilled sentence appeared in the margin: “Perhaps he is lying.” It was beside a dialogue. A character was promising his sister, “I’ll come back on Sunday.” Chloé first thought the comment was part of the novel.

Looking more closely, she saw that the letters were slightly slanted and paler than the printed text. When Nora came over, Chloé showed her the page. “That’s my annotation!” said Nora. She had written it during her first reading, before knowing what happened next. “At that point, I didn’t trust that character,” she added.

Chloé left the remark where it was. She wanted to discover for herself whether the character was going to keep his promise. She took a notebook and wrote the question in it: “Why does Nora doubt him?” Then she went back to reading. The word “perhaps” kept coming back to her. Nora had expressed a doubt, and Chloé now wanted to see what in the story could explain it.

The book and the reader’s tools

Elle l’avait écrite refers to Nora writing the annotation: the feminine ending in écrite matches the earlier direct object l’, which stands for l’annotation. Je me méfiais describes how Nora felt during that first reading. Chloé is still discovering the story.
