In short

The passé simple presents an event as a whole: elle entra (she entered). The imparfait shows a scene, action or habit from within: elle attendait (she was waiting). The choice is about how the narrator shows the event, rather than how many seconds it lasts.

What is the difference between the passé simple and the imparfait?

Une visite tardive
  1. Narrator

La maison était silencieuse. Inès attendait près de la fenêtre.

The house was quiet. Inès was waiting by the window.

  2. Narrator

Un visiteur frappa. Inès se leva et ouvrit la porte.

A visitor knocked. Inès got up and opened the door.

  3. Visiteur

    Bonsoir. Je cherche Paul.

Good evening. I’m looking for Paul.

  4. Inès

Il travaille encore. Entrez, je vous en prie.

He’s still working. Please come in.

était · attendaitwas · was waiting

Focus: the situation already unfolding

imparfait

Inès attendait quand le visiteur frappa.
Inès was waiting when the visitor knocked.

frappa · se leva · ouvritknocked · got up · opened

Focus: the events that move this scene forward

passé simple

Inès se leva, puis elle ouvrit la porte.
Inès got up, then she opened the door.

The visitor’s speech switches to the present: je cherche, il travaille. Characters speak from their own now, even inside a story told in the past. The narrator’s attendait leaves Inès’s waiting in progress; se leva presents getting up as the next complete event.

A long event can still be a complete whole

Il vivait à Nantes quand il rencontra Inès.He was living in Nantes when he met Inès.His living situation at the time of the meeting.
Chaque été, elle revenait.Every summer, she would return.A recurring background habit.
Pendant dix ans, elle revint chaque été.For ten years, she returned every summer. The repeated visits, summed up as a completed series.

What is the narrative imparfait?

Un instant plus tard, le visiteur disparaissait au tournant.

A moment later, the visitor disappeared round the bend.

A narrative imparfait can linger on a final image. Here it presents one disappearance; it is not a repeated habit.

Compare the more direct event form le visiteur disparut au tournant. Both versions can describe the same disappearance. The imparfait version gives the moment an unfolding quality. This literary use explains why a new event can sometimes appear in the imparfait, even after a precise time expression.
