In short
A narrative imparfait can present the next event: Dix minutes plus tard, la réunion se terminait. In that scene it means the meeting ended, rather than ended regularly. The time frame and surrounding events tell you how to read it.

| French | Reading | Clue |
|---|---|---|
| Chaque vendredi, la réunion se terminait à midi. | Repeated habit. | Every Friday. |
| La réunion se terminait quand Léa arriva. | Ending already in progress. | An arrival during the ending. |
| Le vote fut rapide. Dix minutes plus tard, la réunion se terminait. | The next event, seen as a closing scene. | One vote, then a later stage. |
The last line uses the imparfait narratif. At a story’s close, this use is often called imparfait de rupture. It leaves the reader with the event unfolding as a final image. A passé simple version, la réunion se termina, presents the ending as a whole.
Un instant plus tard, Léa renonça.A moment later, Léa gave up.
Focus: The decision is presented as a bounded event.
Un instant plus tard, Léa renonçait.A moment later, Léa gave up.
Focus: A narrative context can show the decision unfolding at the next stage.
A time phrase alone does not determine the use. Le lendemain, elle travaillait encore can describe work already in progress. For the drill below, each cue names the viewpoint to use. The rewrites are grammatical alternatives with different ways of presenting the event.
