Il or elle for mixed groups?
If a group includes at least one masculine person or noun, French uses ils: Marie, Léa et Paul? Ils arrivent. Only an entirely feminine group takes elles. For things, the grammatical gender decides, not the meaning: la table is elle, le bureau is il. In speech, on often replaces nous.
The same rule works for animals: le chat is il, la souris is elle, whatever the animal's sex. And for countries and cities in a sentence: La France est grande ; elle a treize régions.
