In a compound tense, put pas after the conjugated auxiliary: Je n’ai pas compris. With être, the same frame gives Elle n’est pas venue. Object pronouns stay before the auxiliary: Je ne lui ai pas répondu.

| Meaning | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| not | ne + auxiliary + pas + participle | Je n’ai pas répondu. |
| never | ne + auxiliary + jamais + participle | Je n’ai jamais répondu. |
| nothing | ne + auxiliary + rien + participle | Je n’ai rien reçu. |
| nobody | ne + auxiliary + participle + personne | Je n’ai rencontré personne. |
| no messages | ne + auxiliary + participle + aucun message | Je n’ai reçu aucun message. |
Find the conjugated auxiliary first: ai, as, a, avons, avez, ont or a form of être. It carries the tense and person. The participle stays after pas, jamais or object rien. Object personne and the noun phrase aucun message follow the participle in these models.
- Je n’ai compris pas.Je n’ai pas compris.
Pas follows the auxiliary ai, before compris.
- Elle n’a personne rencontré.Elle n’a rencontré personne.
Object personne follows the participle in this pattern.
Negation leaves the participle’s agreement rules in place. With être, a feminine subject gives venue; a feminine plural subject gives restées. In Nous ne les avons pas invités, les is a preceding direct object referring to male guests, so invités is plural.
1 · Add the missing negative word
- Je n’ai compris la question. (not)
- Nous n’avons utilisé ce logiciel. (never)
- Elle n’a oublié. (nothing)
- Tu n’as rencontré . (nobody)
- Ils n’ont reçu message. (no; message is masculine)
- Vous n’avez reçu réponse. (no; réponse is feminine)
2 · Keep pronouns and agreements in place
- Je ne lui ai répondu. (not; lui stays before ai)
- Nous ne les avons invités. (not; les refers to male guests)
- Lina n’est pas hier. (venir; Lina is a woman)
- Les invitées ne sont pas longtemps. (rester; all guests are women)
