In short
Use aucun with a masculine noun and aucune with a feminine noun: aucun message, aucune notification. They mean “no” or “not a single”; keep ne in a full written sentence: Je n’ai aucune question.

- aucun / aucuneChoosing from the speaker’s genderChoose from the noun’s gender.
Lina n’a aucun message. Hugo n’a aucune notification.Lina has no messages. Hugo has no notifications.
Message is masculine and notification is feminine. The person receiving them makes no difference.
- aucune questionAdding an extra indefinite articlePut aucun or aucune directly before the noun.
Je n’ai aucune question sur ce chapitre.I have no questions about this chapter.
Aucune already introduces question. The complement sur ce chapitre tells you what the questions would be about.
- aucun messageCopying the English plural onto the French nounUse the singular in these everyday examples.
Nous n’avons reçu aucun message ce matin. We have received no messages this morning.
English often uses a plural after “no”; French uses singular message here. Special plural nouns have separate patterns, such as aucuns frais (no fees).
- ne…aucuneAdding pas to make the ordinary zero statementNe + verb + aucune + noun already gives the negative.
Je ne vois aucune erreur.I can’t see any errors.
To emphasise zero, say Je ne vois absolument aucune erreur. Keep pas out of this basic pattern.
| Use | French | English |
|---|---|---|
| noun after the verb | Je n’ai aucun problème. | I have no problems. |
| negative subject | Aucune réponse n’est correcte. | No answer is correct. |
| none of this set | Aucun de ces messages n’est urgent. | None of these messages is urgent. |
| noun understood | Des notifications ? Je n’en ai aucune. | Notifications? I have none. |
When the negative phrase is the subject, keep the verb singular: Aucun message n’arrive. When the noun is understood, recover its gender from the question: Tu as des messages ? — Je n’en ai aucun. For des notifications, the reply ends with aucune. The pronoun en stays before the verb.
