Verb drill

French en practice: replace the noun and keep the quantity

Practise j’en ai deux, j’en veux and j’en parle. A worked reference and twelve gaps help you keep quantities and choose en rather than le, la or les.

In short

En replaces an amount or a suitable de complement: Tu veux du pain ? — Oui, j’en veux. Keep an expressed quantity: J’ai trois billets becomes J’en ai trois. Use le, la or les for a specific direct object: Les billets ? Je les ai.

Study first: what disappears and what stays

Four common replacements
Full sentenceWith enWhat stays
J’ai deux abonnements.J’en ai deux.The number.
Je bois du café.J’en bois.No stated number.
Nous parlons du projet.Nous en parlons. The verb parler de.
Elle revient de la réunion.Elle en revient. The meaning “from there”.

With one item, the remaining word matches its gender: un stylo → j’en ai un; une règle → j’en ai une. You can count people too: J’ai deux sœurs → j’en ai deux. When you mean a particular person after de, a stressed pronoun is useful: Je parle de Nora → je parle d’elle.
