Verb drill

French negative past drill: what happened and what did not

Turn a travel checklist into positive and negative passé composé pairs. Mix avoir and être, place ne…pas around the auxiliary and check participle agreement.

In short

In the passé composé, ne…pas surrounds the auxiliary: elle n’a pas réservé; elle n’est pas partie. Keep the past participle after pas. With être, the participle still agrees with the subject: Léa n’est pas arrivée.

Study first: the negative surrounds avoir or être
PositiveNegative
J’ai confirmé la réservation.Je n’ai pas confirmé la réservation.
Léa est descendue du train.Léa n’est pas descendue du train.
Paul a pris un taxi.Paul n’a pas pris de taxi.
Les voyageuses sont rentrées.Les voyageuses ne sont pas rentrées.

A checklist gives two facts for each row: yes means the event happened; no means it did not. Write the positive event first, then mais, then the negative event. In the full-sentence section, use the named person first and a subject pronoun after mais. The cues specify gender so you can write the être participles accurately.

Nora a confirmé la réservation, mais elle n’est pas descendue à Lyon.

Nora confirmed the booking, but she didn’t get off in Lyon.

The first verb uses avoir; the second uses être. Negation keeps the same auxiliary as the positive form.
