A reference is a sequence. Read 204 as deux, zéro, quatre when you want each digit checked separately. Deux cent quatre gives the same number, but makes the character-by-character check less explicit. Une lettre and un chiffre let you name the exact uncertainty.

How do you spell a reference code in French?
Le deuxième chiffre est un zéro. Les autres caractères sont corrects.
The second digit is a zero. The other characters are correct.
In AB-204, the second digit is the fifth character overall: the letters and the hyphen come first. Saying après le deux can be clearer than counting every character. Once the correction is made, ask Pouvez-vous me relire la référence complète ? to check the order as well.
