In short
Choose a French preposition from the sentence’s meaning and its pattern: à Lyon, de Lyon, en train, dans la boîte, chez le médecin, pour apprendre, avec ma sœur. These twelve questions also separate a future delay with dans from a duration with en.

Choose the option that matches the English cue. A change of preposition can change a sentence’s meaning, so read the cue as well as the French. The questions move from places and transport to time, purpose, company and verb patterns.
Study first: en or dans for time
en vingt minutesin twenty minutes: time taken
Focus: the duration needed to finish
Elle prépare le dîner en vingt minutes.
She prepares dinner in twenty minutes.
dans vingt minutesin twenty minutes: time from now
Focus: when something will happen
Le dîner sera prêt dans vingt minutes.
Dinner will be ready twenty minutes from now.
Which French verbs take à or de?
J’apprends à cuisiner pour préparer le dîner avec mes amis.
I’m learning to cook so I can make dinner with my friends.
Apprendre à names the skill; pour gives the aim; avec says who is with you.
For a missed place question, identify what follows the gap: a city, a country, a person or a container. For a missed verb-pattern question, keep the pair together: avoir besoin de, apprendre à. One English “to” can lead to different French constructions.
