Il y a un livre sur la table.
There is one book on the table.
For one known object, use est: Le sac est sous la chaise. For several, use sont: Les sacs sont sous la chaise. The preposition stays the same. Il y a un sac sous la chaise introduces a bag; Le sac est sous la chaise tells you where the bag is.
A possessive can replace the article: dans mon sac, sur ta table, sous notre canapé. Choose one determiner, so “in my bag” is dans mon sac. With a room, dans also means within that space: La table est dans le salon.
