Although aller ends in -er, it has its own forms. With on, keep the singular va, even when you mean “we”. With vous, use allez for one person politely or for a group. Two names form a plural subject: Léa et Sami vont au musée.

Choose a destination

A place, a feeling or a next action?

Je vais au musée.I am going to the museum.

Focus: A destination follows the verb.

Je vais bien.I am well.

Focus: A reply about wellbeing.

Je vais lire.I am going to read.

Focus: An infinitive names the future action.

With a place, learn the full phrase: à la gare, au musée, à la pharmacie, à la poste. Au combines à and le. With an infinitive, only aller changes: nous allons lire, elles vont lire.

Je ne vais pas sortir ce soir.

I am not going to go out this evening.

In this negative, ne … pas surrounds vais. Sortir stays in the infinitive.
