Dialogue

French public debate dialogue: should dogs be allowed off lead?

Read a B2 park consultation with dog owners, parents and walkers. Practise acknowledging concerns and defending a limited off-lead proposal in French.

In short

Acknowledge a specific concern before defending a limited proposal: Je comprends votre inquiétude. In this discussion, sans laisse means off lead, and une période d’essai is a trial period with a review.

At a neighbourhood consultation, four speakers consider a fenced dog area. Take the dog owner’s part. Your aim is to keep the proposal limited while answering the other park users.

Your lines are hidden in practice mode. Say them aloud, then reveal to compare.
  1. Animatrice

    English

The proposal concerns an area for dogs off lead. Who would like to speak?

State a location and a limited trial period.

    English

I propose a three-month trial in the fenced section at the far end of the park.

  3. Parent

    English

My children are afraid of dogs running towards them. How would you protect their peace of mind?

  4. Propriétaire de chien

Je comprends votre inquiétude. Justement, l’aire de jeux resterait séparée de cet espace.

Acknowledge the concern and identify the boundary.

    English

I understand your concern. That is precisely why the playground would remain separate from this area.

  5. Promeneuse

    English

Even with a fence, people need to be able to cross the park without entering that area.

Agree and specify where leads would still be used.

    English

Absolutely. The main path would remain accessible, and dogs would be kept on leads there.

  7. Parent

    English

And what if someone leaves the gate open?

  8. Animatrice

    English

The closing mechanism would need to be examined before any opening.

  9. Promeneuse

    English

I am also concerned about barking near the benches.

Offer limited hours as a response to noise concerns.

    English

We could limit access to this area to eight until ten and five until seven.

  11. Parent

Des horaires ne règlent pas tout. Qui interviendrait en cas de problème ?

    English

Hours do not solve everything. Who would intervene if there were a problem?

  12. Animatrice

    English

That still needs to be defined with the parks service. We also need a way to report incidents.

Make your support conditional on safeguards.

    English

I acknowledge that these safeguards are essential. My support for the trial depends on them being put in place.

  14. Promeneuse

    English

I would be willing to consider the trial if users could give feedback after one month.

Accept an early review and a possible adjustment.

    English

Yes, with an interim review and the possibility of changing the hours.

  16. Animatrice

    English

So we have a proposal to develop further, rather than a decision to open.

  17. Parent

    English

I would like the conditions to be published before the next vote.

  18. Propriétaire de chien

D’accord.

Confirm what the next discussion needs.

    English

Agreed. We can then discuss a concrete plan, with its limits and assessment criteria.
