Verb drill

Aura fini → aurait fini: French reported future-perfect drill

Preserve a completion deadline in past reported speech. Practise conditional auxiliaries, être agreement and eight future-perfect transformations.

In short

When you report a future-perfect statement from a past viewpoint, j’aurai fini becomes elle aurait fini: “she would have finished”. Keep the deadline and the original auxiliary. With être, je serai rentrée becomes elle serait rentrée.

How does the future perfect change in reported speech?

Three moments in one report
MomentWhat happens
4 MayLéa promises completion before 8 May.
8 MayThe deadline she names.
11 MayA colleague reports the earlier promise from that past viewpoint.

Le 4 mai, Léa a promis : « J’aurai terminé avant le 8 mai. »

On 4 May, Léa promised: “I will have finished before 8 May.”

Le 11 mai, Sami a raconté que Léa avait promis qu’elle aurait terminé avant le 8 mai.

On 11 May, Sami said that Léa had promised she would have finished before 8 May.

Completion is later than the promise and due before 8 May. Aurait terminé preserves that relationship. The form reports the promised completion; the later outcome comes in a separate sentence, such as elle a tenu sa promesse or elle a demandé un délai.

elle aurait finishe would have finished

Focus: avoir + past participle

Elle avait promis qu’elle aurait fini avant midi.
She had promised she would have finished before noon.

elles seraient rentréesthey would have returned

Focus: être + agreement with a feminine plural subject

Elles avaient annoncé qu’elles seraient rentrées avant minuit.
They had announced they would have returned before midnight.

In these examples, the conditional perfect carries a future completion seen from the earlier statement. The same form also appears in regrets and conditions, so the reporting context matters. A report that keeps a current future viewpoint can retain the future perfect: elle a confirmé qu’elle aura fini demain. Here, every drill row explicitly asks for the past viewpoint.

Eight past-viewpoint transformations

Write the complete compound verb in the gap. Each hint gives the original future-perfect form. The reporting subject is already supplied. Keep avant or d’ici and the deadline. With être, check the named person or group before choosing the participle ending.
