French parent–teacher dialogue: discuss your child’s progress

Read a B1 parent–teacher meeting about reading, classroom participation and support. Practise asking for examples and agreeing a clear follow-up.

In short

Ask for an example with Pourriez-vous me donner un exemple précis ? Then agree on one action at school, one manageable action at home and a date to review progress. Participer à l’oral means contributing to classroom discussion.

  1. Enseignante

Bonjour, monsieur Martin. Nous allons parler des progrès de Lina.

    English

Hello, Mr Martin. We are going to discuss Lina’s progress.

  2. Parent

Merci de me recevoir. À la maison, elle lit plus volontiers. Est-ce aussi le cas en classe ?

Describe a change at home and ask about school.

    English

Thank you for seeing me. At home, she is more willing to read. Is that also true in class?

  3. Enseignante

    English

Yes, she understands short texts better and finishes her work more often.

  4. Parent

Qu’est-ce qui reste difficile pour elle ?

Ask what she still finds difficult.

    English

What is still difficult for her?

  5. Enseignante

    English

She hesitates to contribute orally, especially in front of the whole class.

  6. Parent

Pourriez-vous me donner un exemple précis ?

Ask for evidence of the difficulty.

    English

Could you give me a specific example?

  7. Enseignante

    English

Yesterday, she knew the answer but preferred to tell me at the end of the lesson.

  8. Parent

Explain her concern and ask for a shared response.

    English

She tells me she is afraid of making a mistake. How could we help her?

  9. Enseignante

    English

I can offer her the chance to prepare an answer with a classmate before speaking to the group.

  10. Parent

Express a wish while respecting her pace.

    English

I would like her to gain confidence without feeling obliged to speak straight away.

  11. Enseignante

    English

We will start with small groups. At home, you can let her choose a short text.

  12. Parent

Check whether a small, specific action is suitable.

    English

Would ten minutes of reading together, three times a week, be enough to start with?

  13. Enseignante

Oui.

    English

Yes. Afterwards, ask her to tell you what she understood in her own words.

  14. Parent

    Comment saurons-nous si cela l’aide ?

Ask how progress will be reviewed.

    English

How will we know whether it is helping her?

  15. Enseignante

    English

I will note her contributions in small groups. Let’s review things in three weeks.

  16. Parent

D’accord.

Confirm your part in the follow-up.

    English

All right. I will also send you a short update on reading at home.
