In short
The conditional softens any request: je voudrais (I'd like) instead of je veux, pourriez-vous (could you) instead of pouvez-vous, auriez-vous (would you have), ça vous dérangerait de… (would you mind…). Add s'il vous plaît and you're perfectly polite.

How do you make a polite request with the conditional?
In shops, je veux sounds abrupt, almost childish; je voudrais or je vais prendre is the norm. With friends, tu pourrais…? is polite but relaxed. In emails, je vous serais reconnaissant·e de… (I would be grateful if you…) is the formal top of the scale.
The conditional is formed from the future stem plus the imparfait endings: je pourrais, tu voudrais, il aurait, nous aimerions, vous pourriez, ils voudraient. If you know the future, you already know the stem.
Je voudrais savoir si la boutique est ouverte dimanche.
I'd like to know if the shop is open on Sunday.
