French science interview dialogue: explain an uncertain result

Practise a B2 science interview about a small score difference, sample size and test order. Clarify a result and its limits in French, with English cues.

In short

Separate the observation from its interpretation: Nous avons observé un écart d’un point, mais nous ne pouvons pas l’attribuer au bruit seul. Name the reason for caution, such as test order or a small sample. Use suggérer for a possible interpretation and démontrer when you mean establish through evidence.

  1. Journaliste

    English

Your team compared two conditions for an attention test. What did you observe?

  2. Chercheuse

State the sample and the two average scores.

    English

Among twenty-four adult volunteers, the average score was eighteen out of twenty in quiet conditions and seventeen with background sound.

  3. Journaliste

Le bruit fait donc baisser l’attention ?

    English

    So noise reduces attention?

  4. Chercheuse

Separate the observed gap from a causal explanation.

    English

We observed a one-point gap, but we cannot attribute it to noise alone.

  5. Journaliste

    English

What prevents you from drawing that conclusion?

  6. Chercheuse

Identify a competing explanation linked to test order.

    English

All participants took the quiet test first. Fatigue may have played a part during the second round.

  7. Journaliste

    English

Why did you not change the order for part of the group?

  8. Chercheuse

Acknowledge the limitation and explain the planned improvement.

    English

That is a limitation of the protocol. For the next test, we plan to assign participants randomly to two test orders.

  9. Journaliste

    L’écart d’un point est-il important ?

    English

    Is the one-point gap important?

  10. Chercheuse

Say what still needs to be assessed.

    English

We need to look at its precision and practical relevance. We have not yet precisely estimated the uncertainty around that gap.

  11. Journaliste

    English

Would more participants necessarily confirm the result?

  12. Chercheuse

Non.

Explain what a larger sample could improve without promising the same result.

    English

No. A larger sample would allow a more precise estimate of the gap, but it could also lead to a different estimate.

  13. Journaliste

    English

Can I write that working in silence improves all pupils’ results?

  14. Chercheuse

Identify the population, task and setting limits.

    English

That would go too far. We studied adults, on a short task, in two specific conditions.

  15. Journaliste

Quel titre rendrait mieux compte de votre observation ?

    English

What headline would better reflect your observation?

  16. Chercheuse

Offer a headline that keeps the observation and next question separate.

    English

An attention test finds a difference between two conditions; a new study will examine the role of test order.

  17. Journaliste

    English

And what message would you like the public to take away?

  18. Chercheuse

Close with the result’s value and the next step.

    English

The result gives us a lead to check. The next step is to test it with a better-controlled protocol.

Nous avons observé un écart. We observed a difference.

Focus: Reports the measured outcome in the test.

La fatigue a pu jouer.Fatigue may have played a part.

Focus: Offers a possible explanation for a past outcome.

Ce serait aller trop loin. That would go too far.

Focus: Pushes back when an interpretation exceeds the study’s scope.

  • La fatigue peut a joué un rôle.La fatigue a pu jouer un rôle.

Use a pu plus an infinitive to express a possible explanation for what happened.

Permettre de takes an infinitive; de becomes d’ before estimer.

Question 1No account needed
Which feature makes fatigue a possible alternative explanation?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Everyone did the quiet task first.. The sound task always came second, so the observed difference may partly reflect test order.

Question 2No account needed
Which phrase expresses a possible cause of a past result?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

La fatigue a pu jouer.. A pu jouer presents a possible past contribution rather than a certain explanation.

Question 3No account needed
Which group actually took part?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Vingt-quatre adultes volontaires.. The researcher describes twenty-four adult volunteers, so the interview gives no direct test of pupils.
