In short

Fluency means keeping a message moving so the listener can follow it. Group related words, pause between ideas and connect your proposal to its reason. A steady Je propose… parce que… can be easier to follow than a rush of unfinished starts.

Is fluency the same as speed in French?

On pourrait… enfin, moi, je… commencer… plus tôt…We could… well, I… start… earlier…

Focus: The listener is still waiting for a complete proposal.

On pourrait… commencer…

On pourrait commencer plus tôt.
We could start earlier.

Je propose de commencer plus tôt, parce que plusieurs personnes doivent partir à midi.I suggest starting earlier because several people need to leave at noon.

Focus: The proposal leads straight into its reason.

Je propose de… parce que…

Je propose de finir à onze heures, parce que je travaille à midi.
I suggest finishing at eleven because I work at noon.

Study first: / marks a possible pause between meaning groups
Say it in groupsWhat the listener gets
Je propose de commencer plus tôt. / Plusieurs personnes doivent partir à midi.A proposal, then the reason in a separate sentence.
On pourrait commencer à neuf heures, / puis faire une pause à dix heures. Two stages of a plan.
Je comprends votre position, / mais cet horaire est difficile pour moi.Acknowledgement, then a practical limit.

The slash is a practice mark. Read each group as a small unit. Try keeping de commencer together, then leave room after the proposal. You can also use two complete sentences when joining everything with parce que feels awkward.

Une réunion de groupe
  1. Camille

Pourquoi voulez-vous commencer plus tôt ?

Why do you want to start earlier?

  2. You

Un instant, je cherche mes mots.

One moment, I’m looking for the words.

  3. You

Plusieurs personnes doivent partir à midi. Si on commence à neuf heures, on aura plus de temps ensemble.

Several people need to leave at noon. If we start at nine, we’ll have more time together.

  4. Camille

D’accord, je comprends. Vous proposez donc neuf heures.

All right, I understand. So you’re suggesting nine.

Give feedback on the point where the thread broke

Ask your partner to repeat the proposal and its reason in English. If they can give the proposal but lose the reason, try a shorter second sentence. Useful feedback sounds like “I followed the first idea; I lost the connection after the pause.” It gives you a specific stretch to improve.
