In short

Read the claim, the reaction and the next line together. Tu m’étonnes ! often means “No wonder!” in a familiar reply. Tu parles ! can dismiss a claim, while Tu parles si… can strongly affirm it; the follow-up helps you choose the meaning.

What does tu m’étonnes mean in French?

Après une longue journée
  1. Lina

Je suis épuisée. J’ai travaillé toute la nuit.

I’m exhausted. I worked all night.

  2. Nora

Tu m’étonnes ! Tu n’as pas dormi du tout.

No wonder! You haven’t slept at all.

Nora’s second sentence confirms Lina’s complaint. Translate the reaction as “No wonder!” or “I’m not surprised!” The literal pieces of tu m’étonnes would point you towards the opposite reaction.

What does tu parles mean in French?

Un programme peu clair
  1. Paul

    Tout est parfaitement organisé.

    Everything is perfectly organised.

  2. Inès

Tu parles ! Personne ne connaît l’heure de début.

Yeah right! Nobody knows the start time.

Personne ne connaît l’heure contradicts the praise. Inès rejects the idea that everything is well organised. The exclamation mark adds emphasis; the contradiction gives you the reason to choose a dismissive English reply.

3. An enthusiastic answer: “You bet!”

Une bonne nouvelle
  1. Nora

Tu étais contente de sa réponse ?

Were you pleased with his reply?

  2. Lina

Tu parles si j’étais contente ! J’attendais son accord depuis un mois.

You bet I was pleased! I’d been waiting for his agreement for a month.

Here the frame tu parles si and the explanation support a strong yes. A dismissive “yeah right” would reverse Lina’s answer. Keep the whole construction on your vocabulary card.

4. A doubtful reply: “My foot!”

Une promesse répétée
  1. Paul

Cette fois, il sera à l’heure.

This time he’ll be on time.

  2. Inès

Mon œil ! Il promet ça chaque semaine.

My foot! He promises that every week.

Inès expresses disbelief and gives a reason for it. Her reaction tells you what she thinks. The next event will show whether he arrives on time. This reply is familiar and blunt.
