French question inversion: proofread verbs, pronouns and hyphens

Practise eight inverted French questions: find the finite verb, keep object pronouns in place and check arrive-t-elle, vient-elle and prend-elle.

In short

Join the subject pronoun to the finite verb: le vois-tu ?, l’as-tu reçu ?, peux-tu vérifier ? Keep object pronouns in their own places, then check whether the verb needs an inserted -t-.

Study first: which verb carries person and tense?
StatementInverted questionFinite verb
Tu le connais.Le connais-tu ?connais
Tu l’as reçu.L’as-tu reçu ?as
Tu peux le vérifier.Peux-tu le vérifier ?peux
Tu le lui donnes.Le lui donnes-tu ?donnes

In a compound tense, invert the auxiliary. The participle stays after the verb–subject group. With a modal and infinitive, invert the modal and keep the object next to its infinitive: peux-tu le vérifier ? The pronoun tu is the subject in every row.

How do you check hyphens in French question inversion?

Study first: added or already there?
QuestionWhat to check
Arrive-t-elle ?Add -t- between two hyphens.
A-t-il répondu ?The auxiliary a needs the inserted -t-.
Vient-elle ?The verb already ends in t. Add one hyphen.
Prend-elle une décision ?Keep the written d. Add one hyphen, with no extra t.

La responsable des échanges arrive-t-elle bientôt ?

Is the exchanges coordinator arriving soon?

The head responsable is feminine singular here; des échanges does not make the subject plural.

Choose one question frame

  • Est-ce que vient-elle ?Est-ce qu’elle vient ?

The est-ce que frame keeps subject–verb order after it. You can also choose Vient-elle ?.

  • L’as reçu-tu ?L’as-tu reçu ?

The auxiliary as carries person and tense, so attach tu there.

  • Ne lui as pas-tu répondu ?Ne lui as-tu pas répondu ?

Keep ne before the object and pas after the inverted auxiliary–subject group.

For each drill line, type only the missing word or joined group. Keep every accent and hyphen. The hints specify the person and tense so you can check the finite verb before worrying about punctuation.
